At times, in our working lives at schools, it is possible to come to a bit of a ‘full-stop’ with a child. We feel we have tried everything and also given everything, but the situation feels a bit stuck. Being in this position isn’t great for either the adult or the child and sometimes it can really help to borrow someone else’s perspective, see the situation from another point of view and/or have support from someone who has experienced something similar.
We are offering the opportunity for TAs to come together via Zoom to discuss, in complete confidence, children who they may be finding challenging. Everyone involved in the discussion will need to confirm that they will respect that anything shared during the meeting remains completely confidential. We will be using a structure known as a ‘2-6-2’ meeting. This involves the professional giving an overview of the child concerned for 2 minutes, whilst the rest of the group listen, the group then discuss the situation and offer ideas and suggestions for 6 minutes.
At the end of this discussion, the person who gave the overview of the child reflects on what has been said then shares what they will be taking from the discussion and trialling with the child. Everyone who is part of the group is able to ‘bring’ a child to the group. The learning that occurs during the 2-6-2 discussions is often far wider than just being directly linked to the child each professional brings to the meeting.
The sessions will be hosted by Tania Beard, an experienced headteacher, who until recently worked in a school with high numbers of SEND and disadvantaged children. There will be no more than 6 people in each group and each session will last 1.5 hours.
The expectation is that you stay as part of the group for the whole session. There will be the opportunity for a follow-up session, which will include a reflection on the impact of the actions taken as a result of the last session, in addition to a further 2-6-2 discussion about the same child or another child.
Cost: £40 per TA per cohort for Teaching Schools South West Members Please note - You will be invoiced for this course by Exeter Consortium TSA. A link to access the session will be sent to you closer to the date.
