Introduction
Safer recruitment training became a statutory requirement for Head teachers and at least one member of every appointment panel in schools in response to the Bichard Inquiry (Soham). Originally overseen by the NCSL (National College of School Leadership) and then CWDC (Children's Workforce Development Council) the content was prescribed and the course could only be delivered by trainers that had undertaken specific training to be 'accredited' by the Secretary of State for Education.
Keeping children safe in education (DfE 2021) makes clear that at least one member of every appointment panel must undertake 'proper' safe recruitment training. In addition, the DfE recognised that the training was highly valued by local authorities, LSCBs and school & college staff alike.
Who Should Attend?.
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is an integral part of the HR management in all education establishments including Headteachers / Deputy Headteachers/ Teachers / Foundation Stage Practitioners / Governors / Post - 16 / Senior Leaders/Managers / Support Staff / Teachers / Youth Workers/business managers.

Using Latin and Greek to enrich vocabulary and support literacy teaching at KS2 & KS3
Learning about the roots of the English language offers a key to understanding new words and enriching vocabulary. As highlighted in Alex Quigley’s influential book ‘Closing the Vocabulary Gap’ (2018), building knowledge of etymology and morphology in the classroom can help pupils to develop greater ‘word consciousness’, which in turn enables them to better understand and use language.
Explore key Latin and Greek root words that feature frequently in English
Explore the importance of Tier 2 and Tier 3 words in the English language
Discuss implicit and explicit strategies for teaching vocabulary in the KS2/3 classroom
Share resources that can be used to support the teaching of etymology at KS2/3
Provide information about how to access free advice and funding from Classics for All to support the introduction or development of classical subjects in your school

About this Course
Overcoming psychological defences in yourself, your colleagues and the children you work with. Would you like to become a more effective leader and change-maker in your organisation? Do you want to improve your relationships with your colleagues and the children you work with? Are you interested in deepening your own self-awareness?
Strong self-awareness and the capacity to stay calm, regulated and loving in the face of challenge are vital skills for being both an effective Thrive practitioner and a powerful leader and change-maker. However, when we feel threatened, our psychological defences can sometimes prevent us from being our best selves.
In this workshop, we will be using the metaphor of the cactus to explore the nature of psychological defences, how and why they develop and what they are protecting. Using experiential exercises, you will have the opportunity to imagine into the psychological defences of the adults and children you work with, as well as reflecting on your own defences. You will then explore how you can support yourself to be your best self, even in challenging circumstances, and how you can help others to do the same.
You will come away from the workshop with:
- deeper knowledge of psychological defences and how they relate to interrupted development
- greater empathy for and understanding of your own defences and those of others
- ways of supporting yourself to stay centred in the face of difficulty
- practice in how to overcome the defences of others through constructive ways of relating.
